Embroidery 101: Herringbone Stitch

Questions? Missed a post? Find the index here.

Herringbone Stitch is very similar to a cross stitch {for those of you who are familiar with cross stitching}. As with most of these stitches, the size of stitch can make a big difference in its appearance.

It can be used as a decorative stitch, fill stitch, or edge stitch, and would also be great for joining two different fabrics for embroidery on seams.  Herringbone Stitch is easy to recognize with it’s rows of overlapping “X” stitches.

Bring the needle up at the beginning of the row of “X” stitches.

Then stitch down across the diagonal and bring the needle up again to the left of the stitch to create a small “X” at the base of the diagonal.

Continue this stitch pattern to create the remaining “X” stitches.

A finished row will look similar to this {depending primarily on size of the stitches}:

Another quick, easy stitch to add some fun detail to your embroidery work.
