Embroidery 101: Woven Wheel Stitch

Questions? Missed a post? Find the index here.

The Woven Wheel, also known as the Woven Spider Wheel, is a round stitch that makes great flowers, spots, I’ve even seen it used as apples. As with most stitches, it can be varied quite a bit by size.

The wheel portion is an uneven number of spokes that can be created in a variety of ways.  For our stitch we’re going to use five spokes, since we want a small wheel.  The weaving stitches will also change the appearance.  Tightly woven stitches will give a taller, bulkier look, whereas loose stitches will spread out further.

We’ve marked our Woven Wheel with spokes and a circle around the outside to differentiate it from a star stitch {note: if you’re not using a disappearing pen, you may not want to draw the outer circle}.

Work the spoke stitches until you have your desired number.

Then bring your thread up near the center next to one of the spokes.

Weave the thread over one spoke and under the next, keeping all the thread on the front of the fabric.

Continue around the spokes until you have reached your desired fill {note: I did not fill all my spokes to the edge, but you can if you want to}.   The finished wheel should look something like this:

This one stitches up quick, and is really cute.  I don’t know why I didn’t use it more!
