We have a recurring picnic with friends during the week, so I thought it would be fun to make Silas a lunch bag. I got out one of the charm packs of Half Moon Modern that I’ve been stashing and started laying some out. He was especially enchanted with teh scissors and the oval dots {“eggs”}, and kept saying, “I love this fabric!”, which, of course, sound absolutely adorable coming from a 2 1/2-year-old.
I put some insulated batting on the back and then proceeded to practice my pebble quilting. I don’t know whether it was the insulated batting or just my machine being evil, but I had terrible tension issues! My machine {Viking Sapphire 870} has auto tension…as a result, it sometimes gets the tension all wrong and I don’t know how to fix it!
I tried to get it straightened out, but since I know this lunch bag will see some abuse love I didn’t put too much effort into it and just kept on going. Though, I think my frustration made my pebbles look a little wobbly! I’m hoping to keep sneaking away to the machine and finish this up in the next few days!

I love it….I am sorry for the frustration with the auto-tension. I have had a bit of that with my beloved Pfaff Creative – I believe these wonderful machines can be programmed to anticipate only sew (he he) much! I know this bag is indeed going to get a lot of love, I know hearing Silas say “I love this fabric!” had to make you smile. xoxo
Silas is adorable! I love that fabric too!
Darling. I love the pebble effect. Something I need to work on. You will never notice in the end on the tension. Your fabric is darling and even better that a sweet 2 yo loved it too…smiles…Renee

Love the fabrics!
Wow, the fact that you did this kind of quilting–which I had never heard of–is astounding. The bag is super cute!
My machine had automatic tension as well and most of time to…. Well not so much hat is great. Then there times like
So cute that your 2.5 yr old can appreciate good fabric!! I have always loved the prints and colors of half moon modern….looks great with pebble quilting.
I have a Viking Topaz 20 so I know the auto-tension issues quite well. Every quilt I have to make up a new quilt sandwich so I can manually adjust the tension until it looks good. I don’t trust the auto-tension very much anymore, even while doing embroidery I find I have to make adjustments.
I know some models had to have some sort of design change with the tension disks and uptake lever because there was a design flaw. I recently had my machine worked on and had the uptake lever modified with the warranty modification so the thread wouldn’t pop out anymore.
The tension can be frustrating but you’ll get an idea after working with different threads what to set it for each thread you quilt with. Aurifil seems to need to have more tension for 50 wt sometimes.
I really like those “wobby pebbles” It’s got a w himsical look to it
