Slate or Gray?

I am still working away on Silas’s twin quilt and am debating which solid to use. I had originally thought Moda Bella Gray would be a perfect fit. But, after piecing a few blocks, it seemed too light for the colors I am using. So, I’ve switched to Moda Bella Etchings Slate. But now I’m wondering if it is too dark? I do have to choose one though, as I don’t really want to buy any more fabric for this quilt!

Thoughts?

I love the slate, personally, but I like to have some contrast in my quilts! Either will be lovely, so I don’t think you can go wrong. :)

Not that I am an expert but it seems more balanced with the darker color. My eyes were drawn instantly to the grey in the first picture – and traveled around the block in the second.

I love the slate. I don’t think it’s too dark at all.

  4. 4

I’m in the slate camp too! I love the blocks…Silas is going to have an awesome quilt!

Both blocks look good. I personally like the gray best as it balances the aqua/white. The slate sort of gives a 3 dark vs l light effect. Of course when you lay out a series of blocks the overall appearance becomes entirely different, so I would do so before I made a final decision. Which color does Silas prefer?

Call me odd man out but I prefer that lighter grey. With the darker you have 3 blocks that read dark with the white/blue reading light. It makes the 4some a bit muddy then. I think you have more consistent look with using the lighter grey.

With the slate grey your black/white pattern reads white with black, making it stand out much more and while that would normally be fine the other 3 squares don’t have that quality.

But hey, its your quilt, what looks good to you? That’s all that matters in the end.

  7. 7

I prefer the lighter gray as the darker stands out to me. But it depends on the bigger picture!

  8. 8

If it was me I would use both. If I had to pick just one I would go for the lighter one because the green and orange are on the darker side.

I prefer the darker tone, but I like the idea of mixing up both too!

I like the lighter one. I think it makes the pez fabric in the middle of it pop!

  11. 11

I think I like them both, a little of the both of them playing all around in the quilt would be the best of both worlds.

  12. 12

Since you ask, I personally prefer the slate but either would look nice.

I love Leannes idea of using both. And your mom is right, Silas will love it regardless.

    I love the lighter color…

I like the slate, but I think the other gray would look nice as well. Either way, you can’t go wrong.

Love the balance of lights and darks with the grey ?
Agree that the “Pez” stripe gets more notice.
How about Slate as a binding ?
    Anyways….. looks like fun .

I think that slate looks the best :)

  21. 21

How would both shades go? just to mix it up and help balance it out? If I was to pick one I think I would go with the slate. Looking forward to seeing what you choose to do. hugs

  22. 22

I tried looking at your photo in b&w to concentrate on value, and that way it seems to look more balanced with the slate. But I like the look of the grey, too, so I’d probably mix the two.

I’m in the minority. I prefer the gray. I think the slate jumps out and dominates over the other colors. I think the gray is a better fit. Just my opinion.

I prefer the lighter gray personally :)

  28. 28

I think they both work well, but each gives a different effect….the grey blends in more and the slate gives a greater contrast. It depends if you’d like a lighter airy quilt or a stronger bolder one, I think. Either would be lovely though :)

That’s a tough call. I agree, the one seems too light and the other too dark. Could you try somehow photoshopping your square to look like the completed quilt so you could kind of see how it would look in a bigger setting? I think I’m leaning towards the lighter one if that helps at all.

  33. 33

I like it a lot better with the darker colour.

Hope I am not to late for my two cents worth…I believe the Bella Gray is the one to use because with the brighter fabrics and designs, the design in the gray block pops more than the dark gray…It gets left behind with the slate and does not really gowith the other three tone wisw….well maybe a dimes worth….

  35. 36

Go with the darker slate. I raised three boys all in their 20s now. Guys go for the bolder contrasts. Listen to Mom–always! He will love it because you made it! (But I am glad you asked anyway! ) Sew it up with love!

  36. 37

I like the lighter gray, the slate held my eye too long….I like the idea of mixing it and doing some of each, sprinkling a few slate in there randomly, it will give an unexpected pop. Silas will love it either way because his Momma made it and he loves you AND he loves quilts! xoxo

  37. 38

Definitely the darker grey (I’m Canadian eh!) colour is my pick.
    Brilliant and most assuredly lovely.

  38. 39

I like them both, but if I had to choose I would choose….Grey. =)

I personally like the slate. I think it adds more contast. Plus you can always make sure it is not too dark by keeping lots of bright colors.

  40. 41

I vote for the slate. I think it would give it some nice contrast!

  41. 42

I would definitely use both, I like the contrast of them together…

  42. 43

    Slate works for me!

  43. 44

I like the gray best but why choose one!

  44. 45

Love these blocks. Great choice going with the slate.
