Sweet Treats Blog Hop :: Book Bag

|

Welcome to day three of the Sweet Treats Blog Hop, hosted by Alyce of Blossom Heart Quilts and sponsored by the Fat Quarter Shop {there is a giveaway too…so keep reading!}.  The goal of the blog hop is to show a variety of cute little projects that can be made with Moda’s newest precut {you know we all love precuts!}, Mini Charms, adorable 2 1/2″ squares, and a half yard of fabric!  Today I’m sharing this cute little book bag:

Let’s get started making this cute little bag for a little one to carry books, toys, or maybe even pajamas for overnight stays with Grandparents!!  You will need:

  • 2 Mini Charm Packs {we used Windsor Lane}
  • 1/2 yard coordinating fabric {we used Gray Versailles Damask}
  • 1/2 yard fusible fleece

For the body of the bag I used 25 Mini Charms for each side; five charms by five charms. Sew them together into rows and  then sew the rows together.

For stability and strength I used Pellon 987F Fusible Fleece, which I ironed on to the back of both the front and back of the bag body. It is very easy to work with and gives a nice feel to the bag.

Then I quilted from corner to corner of the squares going in both directions. You could quilt in any way you prefer, I just really liked this look for this bag.

With rights together sew along both sides and across the bottom of bag body using 1/4″ seam allowance.

Trim the corners just outside of the stitching to reduce bulk for turning.

For the lining cut 2 pieces 10 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ square, or the measurement of your bag. For the handles cut two pieces 3″ wide by 15 1/2″ long. For the binding cut one piece 2 1/4″ by  about 30″, this will give you plenty of extra for sewing the binding.

Sew the lining the same way as the outside of the bag,  slip the lining into the bag and pin the bag and lining together at the top, sew around the top edge.

Fold the 3″ strip of fabric together and sew along the long side, using 1/4″ seam allowance, creating a tube. Press the seam allowance open. Do this for both handles.

Turn each handle right side out and press flat with the seam running in the middle of the handle. Sew 1/4″ along the long outer edge of each handle.

Pin the handles to the top of the bag one square in from the outer edge of the bag, with the seams facing out, sew across the top to secure.Using the remaining piece make the binding and sew onto the top of the bag and finish the same way you would when making a quilt.

Top stitch the handles to the binding in the upright position. Now you have a little bag to give for a birthday gift, as a Christmas gift, or just a fun surprise!

Oh, just for size reference {and because he’s so cute!}, here’s a shot of the original book bag, which is lovingly used by Silas quite often, like last week to tote a few toys to the local farmer’s market!  It is not uncommon him to ask, “where’s my purse?”, so he can make sure all his favorite books or toys are on hand!

  54. I love the bag! I would add some pockets inside and use it for small sewing and embroidery projects. When my boys were little our favorite books were “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” and “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom”. I still have them and hope someday to share them with grandchildren.

  55. Favorite children’s book….hmmmm. There are so many wonderful ones to choose from. We love anything by Dr. Seuss, of course. Oh, and the classics like The Kissing Hand. There is one that has special meaning for us because it was given to my step-son when he was little and when he grew up, he made a point of bringing it across country to give it to my daughter who is 10 years younger than him. It’s called Goodnight, Gecko. Such a cute little story.
