I’ve done a little bit of knitting this winter, first Norah’s hat, and now some boot cuffs. I pinned the tutorial here, but since I was away from home when I made them, I didn’t quite have the right supplies. Instead, I made some modifications and they didn’t turn out quite right.

They actually look okay in this picture, but after wearing them for just a little while, they get all bunched up because I made them too big. I used the same size yarn as the tutorial, but since I didn’t have the same size needles with me, I used smaller ones {a size 6, where the tutorial used a 7}. As a result, I cast on more stitches…too many more {60 instead of the tutorials 44}.

I tried a new cast off technique that I pinned here, and really liked it! I don’t know if I’ll do a regular cast off again…
I think my real problem too was that the yarn was just too bulky. I’ve picked up some different yarn and am going to try my hand at another pair. Hopefully I get them done soon enough that it is still boot season.
I know this is primarily a sewing/quilting/pattern designing blog, but I do love to spend some time with yarn and knitting needles! Do you have a secondary hobby or are you strictly a fabric person?

A mother-daugher {best friends} team who love to spend our days together {long distance} sewing, quilting, designing, drinking coffee, chatting, and chasing our little ones!

I can’t seem to limit myself to just one hobby. I currently crochet, cross stitch, embroider in addition to my sewing. Before I spent much time sewing I was did calligraphy.
They look so cute.
I love the cuffs. I’d like to try to make some too. And I love knitting and crochet probably as much as I love sewing and quilting. So I love the variety.

They do look cute, too bad they didn’t turn out right. I bet the next ones will! I sew a little, but I also do scrapbooking and card making.
Very cool! I am sure the next pair will be even better! XOXO
I knit and knit long before I started quilting, although I have sewed since I was a kid. Oh and I weave, and do needlework and embroidery of all kinds and spin a little. Well there are some other things too but lately quilting takes most of my time, and there is always knitting in my purse. I would make those cuffs in the right gauge and also a bit longer so that they stay in place as your leg muscles move.

how I wish I had legs slim enough and long enough to tuck my jeans into my boots so I could have a pair of boot cuffs…
Don’t limit yourself! It’s a creative blog, be creative anyway you want. I sew, quilt, crochet, make jewellery, bead weave, play with polymer clay, make candles, needle felt, a bit of wet felting, embroidery, cross stitch, needle point, other forms of needlework, papercraft… you name it, I want to do it!

I think lots of us who sew also knit. I love knitting and am glad you shared this bind-off method. Having read Elizabeth Zimmerman ( who convinced me to switch to continental method after @ 5-6 months of English style) i am surprised I did not know this cast on. I’ll try it on my next project.). Right now knitting mittens for Christmas 2013. Thanks and good luck on your next boot toppers!
Those are really cool. I have trouble staying with just one hobby. I also sew garments, count cross stitch, stamp greeting cards, make jewlery and every once in a while crochet a little
it’s nice to hear about your knitting … i’m a knitter myself . like your style! try a new piece with what you have, then try again ’til you’re satisfied. even after 66 years of knitting, i still do the same. not often, but still.

These look great! I love wearing boots and would like some of these too. It’s good to try lots of crafts, I think, or even combine them sometimes.
Wishing you a wonderful week!

those cuffs are so cute. I wonder if I could figure out how to crochet some for my DIL. I am not a very good knitter or crocheter for that matter. I start a crochet class tonight. I am excited.

Super! I’ve been meaning to try a little cuff of my own. This was a great post to get me motivated and give me a few things to think about. Thanks so much!
