Since I’ve been sewing lately, with much slow-going progress, I thought I’d try something a little different, and link up with Emily’s new linky party, Sew Thinky Thursday. She asks a sewing realted question, and everyone gets to know each other better by answering. You can read more about it here. Now, on to the question:
When did you start sewing? Tell us a bit about your sewing history. When did you realize you were really hooked?
I’ve sewn since I was a little girl, in fact, I think my sewing history may have started something like this:

My mom and grandma both sewed lots of things, and I often got the chance to help out. In fact, I remember being about eight and at a friend’s house and she suggested we make clothes for our Barbies. Her mom gave us some fabric and hand sewing needles, and my response was, “at home I am allowed to use the sewing machine”.
As I got older I made more and more things. I made clothes for my dolls, helped my mom make dresses, I even made a bunch of costumes for the ballet class I taught when I was in high school. During my senior year, a woman at our church had a quilting class, I signed up and made this heart quilt for my college dorm room. I didn’t sew during college, but I did get married right after college and moved across the country with my husband for the army. I was all by myself while he was at work, didn’t have a car, and needed to do something. Fortunately, when my parents came to visit a month or two later, my mom brought me a sewing machine. I decided I was going to make a quilt, and took my husband with me to Joann’s, picked out some fabric, and started sewing. I sewed four queen size quilts using Joann’s fabric before I discovered ordering fabric online…
Anyway, I think I’ve always been hooked on sewing, because no matter what other hobby I pick up {I’ve tried so many!}. I always end up back at the sewing machine. I really just love to sew, pretty much anything. At this point in my life, I’m happy to be able to sew for business too, but I really do find so much enjoyment in it, that even if the business aspect goes away, I know I’ll always be a sewer.

I will never tire of seeing that picture of you with your baby while you sew! Thanks for sharing your story – I’m sometimes jealous of those who were raised in such an openly crafty environment!

I love your picture, what a perfect way to be able to sew and watch the baby at the same time!

I like that picture of you and your little girl! It reminds me of those special back braces that one can wear to help with posture when hunched over the sewing machine. Yours is a much more personal (and cuter) version of that.
Oh, wow. This photo is so funny and cute at the same time.

Thamks for sharing this. I wrote a post and added it to the linky
How cool! It was so nice to read about you today. Love the picture.
Haha, I love that – “at home I’m allowed to use the sewing machine.” I hope that is something I can pass along to my daughter too.
Just wondering, do you think you could get away with wearing Norah in a pack like that still? She is quite the mover!! Adorable picture! You were always ahead of your time!
I did try it the other night…it worked great for ironing and cutting, but once I sat down at the machine she started having a fit! At least I could get some done though!
I loved seeing this sweet picture!! What a great way to still continue sewing and keep your baby very happy!

such an awesome picture! love your story. thanks for sharing!
A long time ago, I used to take in typing (I said a long time ago!) and sewing, and we have a photo of our oldest on my back in the backpack of those days. Fond memories! Love the additional blocks especially if using for a NICU baby quilt instead of just a table topper. It’s so happy!
