My mom is co-hosting the Covert Robin handmade swap with Rachael of Imagine Gnats as well as several other co-hosts. We were both discussing what we want to make for our partners, and thought I’d write a little post with some ideas for the swap {or for a little handmade gift for anyone!}. When deciding on a swap gift, I try to do as much research into what my partner’s style is, before starting out. I usually try to pick something that is similar to the style of fabric they use, but not quite the same. Personally, I think it is always fun to get something made with fabric I don’t actually own, and in a style slightly different than what I might make myself.
Note: if your partner does not have a blog, Flickr, or Pinterest account, the best method is just to make something you would love, and send that.
Additionally, since the goodies for the Covert Robin are supposed to be valued around $20-30, consider what the retail value of the same item would be at a shop, then value your item at $5-15 more {depending on the amount of detail}, as it is handmade. Another great option is to look up similar items on Etsy and see what people are asking for those items.
Now, to find some ideas. First, here is a Pinterest Board of most of our tutorials, as well as things others have made from our tutorials:
And here’s another Pinterest Board I created filled with tutorials and inspiration:
I’ll be adding to this board over the next few weeks, as well as posting my own design process.
If you’re sending internationally, I have a couple more tips: First, mark your customs value carefully, others may have to pay fees even for gifts, so think about your value. I usually do cost of supplies plus a couple dollars. Next, make sure to check country restrictions, especially if you’re sending something edible or from food products {like a pincushion filled with crushed walnut shells}, not all countries accept all items. Finally, send your items in a plastic bag with the recipient’s address clearly marked in the bag, this way, if your envelope gets torn, all the contents won’t spill out and be completely lost, and hopefully it will still find it’s way to your partner!
Hope this helps, and if you have any questions, please ask! I will do my best to find the answer for you! Or, if you’re a seasoned swapper and have some tips for us, that would be great too! Happy swapping!

I love your lunch bag, it is just lovely and I can’t wait to have a go at making one of my own. I am going to make an insulated one for taking hot food to parties. So delightful I feel like a picnic. Thanks for sharing.
Great ideas for figuring out what and how to send things.
