Butterfly Spools Mini Quilt

|

The last few days I’ve been busily working on my mini quilt for the Fab Little Quilt Swap. I have to admit, I somehow let the dates slip by me, only to need to mail it today! But, I finished in the nick of time and I’m really happy with my quilt!

Butterfly Spools Mini Quilt

I went back and forth with several ideas, but finally settled on making some butterflies. I followed the Butterfly Block Tutorial here, but wanted a 5″ finished block {so I could use charm squares}, so mine looked like this:

April 20138I decided to get brave and do some special free motion quilting {and let me say, the Sensor-Q foot is amazing…no tension issues at all!}.  It may not be all that even, but for my first time, I was really happy with it:

Warm Butterfly SpoolI used a squiggly line in the gray, loops in the bodies and the spool top and bottom, and then drew some wings.  I quilted the sashing with dense swirls using white in the top thread and gray on bottom.

Cool Butterfly SpoolMy two spools remind me of warm and cool variegated threads, which I thought was a fun way to incoporate a rainbow {as most of my partner’s favorite mini quilts had a rainbow theme}.

I am now thinking it may be necessary to make an entire quilt of this pattern.  The Finished blocks are 12″ x 15″, for a finished size of 24″ x 15″.  I hope my partner likes it!

I’ve got some more weekend sewing planned, and hopefully will have some new finishes next week, sorry it’s been so quiet around here!
