a season by handToday we’re welcoming Beth from plum and june. Not only does Beth have a blog where she shows off her fun and fresh quilting and sewing ideas, she has also been hosing {for over a year I think} the Let’s Get Acquainted blog hop and link up, as well as the Advice for New Bloggers Series.  In fact, Beth is starting the new blogger hop again and you can find more information about it here.  And, in perfect timing, Beth is sharing her Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery, who is also one of this week’s sponsors!  Thanks Beth for joining us!

Hi, I’m Beth from plum and june and I’m excited to be here to share the projects I work on when I am away from my sewing machine.  While I love sitting at my sewing machine, I also really enjoy a variety of projects that I can work on other places – whether it is my couch while my husband and I relax and watch some television at night, in the car when I’m the passenger on long drives, or while enjoying some quiet time during a visit where my kids are busy with their grandparents.

Most recently, my project of choice is cross-stitch.  I had never cross-stitched until January of this year when the Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery released peeks of their Woodland Sampler and it was just too cute not to try.

As you can see, I am a month behind but not because I haven’t been cross-stitching, rather because I also started their spring sampler.

Long before I started sewing, I learned how to crochet and that remains one of my favorite crafts.

Last summer when my sewing machine was broken, I crocheted a granny square blanket as part of a fun crochet along. This was a great project to work on away from home since I could just crochet a block or two at a time – you can read more about it here.

And finally, I have my ongoing, never ending, and sometimes ignored for months at a time English Paper Piecing project (and after reading some of the prior posts in the Season by Hand series, I really want to make a cuter travel pouch to keep them organized.)

This is my preferred project to bring to my quilt guild meetings and other sewing dates.  The pile is getting quite large and I probably should start sewing some together soon.  However, I’m not sure exactly what I even want to make with these little hexagons – whether I want to keep them in something mostly hand-sewn or if I want to finish it with my sewing machine like I did my last epp project.

Thanks Jennie and Clara for inviting me to be a part of this wonderful blog hop.  I look forward to reading the posts throughout the summer and soaking up all the hand-sewn inspiration!

  1. your cross-stitch is amazin.g! I have tried cross-stitch so many times but always give-up – just too fiddly!

  2. Love your crocheting. I cross stitch on aida cloth and have always done so – so I commend you on using linen. It scares me. As for hexagons, I will never make them but I have a great appreciation for anyone who does. I hope you find a pattern you like in which to use them.

  3. I also started with Crocheting and after seeing all your beautiful colors I think I may have to revisit that time in my life.

  4. I love your assortment of crocheted granny squares and circles. The colors are so neat. I need to learn how to do these.

  7. I love that woodland sampler, it’s so cute. I’ve just bought a cross stitch magazine with a really cute little bird kit and if I enjoy it I think I’m going to buy that pattern too 🙂

  8. I enjoy cross stitch as well and yours is so awesome! My grandma taught me how to crochet years ago. I’m trying to re-learn, because I really want to make my own granny square afghan!! I love your crochet examples 🙂

  9. Cross-stitch is my first crafty love. My sister crochets, but I have firmly told myself I am not allowed to learn crochet or knitting. Too many other hobbies already!

  10. What beautiful projects! I have some hand projects going on myself. On a side note, I store my epp hexie’s in a plastic shoebox.

  11. Thanks for sharing your little cross stitches. They are so cute. I used to make a lot of cross stitch pieces but then started quilting. Every now and then I go back to make something small. Still love the look of the cross stitched pieces.

  12. OH, I used to cross stitch many years ago. cute samplers you are working on.
I am new to crochet so I enjoyed seeing your works.
    thanks for sharing.

  13. My go to hand projects are also cross stitch and crochet. We’re on the road 4-5 times a month to visit family and friends and I always have a bag with a few projects in the car. I got alot of Christmas gift scarves done in travel time.

  14. Eeeep! That woodland sampler looks absolutely cute! Would be perfect for my girls’ rooms – crosstitched hoops to hang on the wall. Might have to buy that one.

  15. I agree – I need something prettier than a plastic shoe box to carry my hexie fabric, thread and needles around in. Maybe something bigger like a handled tote…..hexies are addicting!

  16. Wonderful. I mostly sew by hand, although I do have a machine, and it is lovely to see what other people are doing as well. The hexagons look lovely, I’ll be interested to see what they turn into!
