Bizzy Kid Quilt Top and a Decor Question

Whew…I first decided to make this quilt about a year ago {I blogged about starting it here}, and in spite of my efforts, I just lost my steam when I pieced half of the light blue hourglass blocks and then finished everything else, but still had to go back for the other ten.  So it sat.  Now that I’ve entered into panic nesting mode {does it count as nesting if it revolves around sewing and not setting up the house?} before baby 3 arrives, I figured it was about time to break out the quilt and get it on his bed.

And here is the finished quilt top.  The pattern is Bizzy Kid by Alison of Cluck, Cluck, Sew.  I am really happy I chose this pattern as I think it works well as a boy quilt.  I picked a few really distinct prints {the yellows and the chevron}, which made it a little bit more difficult to lay out than I had anticipated.  However, seeing it on the bed, I think it was worth it.

So, my question to you is, what should I put on that big, empty wall next to the bed?  I had though of vinyl wall art, but we may be switching rooms around in a few months, so I don’t want it to be stuck {from what I’ve seen, most is removable but not reusable}.  So, that remains my biggest dilemma.  If you have any ideas, I’d much appreciate them!

In the meantime, I’m sending this quilt out to be quilted!  I’m pretty excited as I’ve never had a quilt done professionally before.  I will admit, I’m kind of nervous to have someone else see the back of my quilt.  The seams are not perfect {and I pressed them open, for some unknown reason, terrible idea for this particular quilt!}, and I just feel a little insecure about it.

But, I cannot wait to get it on my little boy’s bed, and am glad I finally finished it!

  1. Hi Jenny! The quilt is just darling! For the wall consider buying some muslin or other heavy fabric and letting your little one draw on it with fabric markers. When done you iron it to set it and then frame it or jut stretch it And hang it on the wall. He could start a collection of his own!

  2. This quilt top is beautiful and it’s such a good idea to send it out to be professionally quilted! I have just sent one to be done too and am really looking forward to seeing the result. The colours of your quilt are lovely and great to have in a boy’s room!

  3. I love this quilt, and the fabrics you chose are perfect. What does your little boy like? That is how you should choose what to put there. I’ve seen some vinyl wall art at Dollar Tree and for a dollar it is ok if you have to throw it away when you switch rooms. You could always make some matching balloons or kites out of any leftover material to put on the walls. You can make templates out of cardboard to wrap the material around and then use yarn or ribbons for the strings.

  4. The quilt is very nice. As far as the wall is concerned, I’m a huge fan of posters. They are inexpensive and posters and frames are readily available at places like Michael’s and Joann Fabrics.

  5. The quilt top came out wonderful! I am going to make two quilts for my nephews and this may be the pattern now that I’ve seen yours. I have a similar wall that I’m pondering too. Do you have some of your son’s artwork that you could frame and hang? There is a ton of printables on pinterest that you could add in with them making a little collage. Happy nesting!

  6. I absolutely love the colors on this quilt (but, then, I always love the colors you and Clara select). That quilt is going to be good for Silas for several years.

Maybe you could hang a kite or two on the wall? Just a few nails, so it would be easy to move if he switches rooms.

  7. Hi Jennie! I love how this quilt top turned out! For the wall art, have so you seen those little boy art projects that involve driving cars through paint and then driving them on paper or canvas to make colorful tread marks? Silas could do this with you using paint colors that coordinated with the quilt, and if you did it on a pre-stretched canvas you’d have it finished in a snap! xoxo

  8. Have you thought of making something from fabric instead of vinyl? You can attach it to the wall with liquid starch, so it’s reusable, you just have a big mess to clean up – nothing new for a mom of 3, right? 😉

  9. Girl this quilt is wonderful! I just love love love it! And I love Michelle’s idea of car tread art. Miss you guys! Can’t wait for the arrival of sweet baby girl1

  10. Your quilt is beautiful; just perfect for your little boy! We haven’t had little people in our home for many years, so no idea what to go on a wall. In our children’s rooms, it was all about shelves over the beds to hold our son’s hockey trophies in his room and shelves to hold our daughter’s highland dancing trophies in hers!

  11. This is such a wonderful quilt. You did a great job. And I’m sure that the long arm people see some pretty interesting things. You are a good quilter/sewer so you have no worries. Silas is going to love his new quilt.

  12. First, you should not feel nervous about your quilt top. It’s gorgeous and you do a great job! I think the quilt is just perfect for a little boy. For the wall, why not a couple of framed quilt blocks in coordinating colors? And I don’t know how artsy you are, but maybe if you aren’t you could find someone who is or print something, but when my brother was little my mom drew these cartoony looking ducks and gave them silly names like, “Quacker Jack”. I wish I could remember more of them. Maybe Silas has a favorite animal and you could do something like that? Or ask him. Maybe he has an idea. You never know! Finally, yes, I think it does count as nesting. 🙂 I guess it won’t be long now! Take care of yourself!

  13. Adorable!~ and yes, it counts as nesting. 🙂 How about a small, narrow shelf to hold a few favorite books or a stuffed animal? My kids always liked having their favorite things nearby the bed. Have a great week!

  14. Super cute quilt. I really love it. For the wall, have you considered making something from the same fabrics and using the starch/water mixture that is supposed to put fabric onto a wall just like wall paper but is easily removed? You could make quilt blocks and then cut shapes out of the blocks and stick them onto the wall.

  15. Your son’s quilt turned out beautifully. And I quilt for other people and I don’t bother to look at the backs. My job is to put the layers together. Besides the front is what interests me! One thing that I really love is chalk cloth. It is like a blackboard that can be drawn on with chalk (so no harm done if the chalk colours walls or furniture) and with a little timtex (heavy-weight interfacing for ball cap peaks) and a quick fabric border, you will have something you can move from room to room!

  16. Way to finish the top! I’m always leaving projects for waaay too long but eventually they get pulled out again and finished 🙂
What about some stenciled canvases for the wall? I did it in our littlests room. The dollar store has cheap canvases, paint and the contact paper…

  17. The quilt is lovely and will be perfect on the bed. You can get posters from favourite books or movies framed on styrofoam so if they fall they will not break or hurt your child. Also, a collage of family members – grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, close friends – and also of fun trips or activities is great fun for kids too, and can provide endless fodder for bed time stories (let me tell you about when aunt x did y, it was so fun, or remember our trip to y,…..). It also connects your child to family and friends, especially those he might not see that often. You can just do this on a bulletin board so that it can be changed or added to.

  18. Jennie, I remember seeing this post a long time ago and really liking this quilt. Soon after, I bought the pattern. I am FINALLY making it! My oldest is graduating from high school this year and I haven’t made him a quilt…yet! I had a few pezzy prints all ready and few fat quarters from my stash but needed some more. I found it all at the quilt festival! I’ll send you a pic.
