Great Granny Squared Sew Along

|

The winner is #32, Capi Cohen!

Hello and welcome to the second week of the Great Granny Sew Along!  The Fat Quarter Shop is hosing a sampler sew along for Lori Holt’s book, Great Granny Squared, and making a sampler called Mama’s Crochet Quilt.  Last week was the Filled Basket Block, and this week we’re making the Yarn and Crochet Hook.

All the cutting directions are in the Great Granny Squared book, then, there are additional PDFs available to make the sampler {so, you will need both a copy of the book and the PDFs to make this quilt}.

Crochet-Block

One of the fun things about the patterns from this book is that they use little pieces, so they’re great for scraps.  I pulled all the yarn ball pieces from my scrap boxes!  And, don’t forget to visit Kimberley, Lori, Debbie, and Kerri to see their blocks!

Block-&-Book

And, now for the part I’m sure you’re here for, giveaways! The Fat Quarter Shop has given me a copy of Great Granny Squared to give away to one of you! So, just leave a comment about a current sewing or crochet project. I’ll draw a winner Friday, May 2nd so that I can ship the book over the weekend.

But, that’s not all, submit a photo of your Yarn and Crochet Hook block to the Great Granny Squared Flikcr group and be entered to win the Stitchy Fun Sampler pattern!  Three winners will be drawn by the Fat Quarter Shop.  Happy sewing {and crocheting}.

  3. I’m working on sorting and cutting my scraps from a recent project into 5″, 2.5″ and 1.5″ squares and strips. So I’ll have lots of usable scraps if I should happen to win the book!

  4. I have to finish binding two quilts today, one a QAL, one from a bee. Evenings when I don’t sit at my machine, I crochet coasters of all patterns. Btw, I have 8 or 10 great granny squares that I made last spring from Lori’s directions she had on her blog. I still haven’t made them into a quilt, but that looks like my next project…

  5. Thanks for giving all of us a chance to win Lori’s new book! I am putting thw binding on a quilt top that my daughter made me for Christmas. It was her first attempt and actually quite good. I am looking for summer projects and this would be perfect.

  6. Hi Jennie! Thank you “sew” much for hosting this week’s block for the Great Granny Sew Along.
I love that you used scraps for your blocks because that’s what I do too!
Your block turned out so cute and yes, I do thing the background fabric theme works out perfectly for it.
I used the same print in aqua to back my Mama’s Crochet quilt:)

  7. I love the colors and prints you chose for the crochet balls and the background too! I am machine quilting a tee shirt quilt for my son and it’s taking forever!!!

  12. Loving your yarn & hook block Jennie!! … I am hoping to start this SAL later in the week, but my current sewing project would have to be my Swoon quilt in Ruby (with 6 down, and only 3 to go!) … I’ve also taken up a serious interest in crochet lately too, with me in the process of making my fourth doily from an old (1997) booklet I found in my mother’s craft draw 🙂 Really enjoying the process of learning new stitches and techniques in this, and I’m loving that I am gradually becoming more even and neat with the stitches!!

  13. I have a large zig-zag afghan blanket that I started a few years ago and really want to make some progress on, but seeing as how I recently moved to a tropical climate, I’m finding it hard to want to crochet in this heat. I’ll finish is one of these days. Thanks!

  14. Thank you for hosting a giveaway. I’m making a star quilt using English Paper Piecing technique, which I love. This method is so portable and is perfect for sitting on the couch. I also just started a floral cross stich pattern on linen from the book “Liberty Cross Stich”. The book is refreshingly different in that it has projects that combine Liberty Tana Lawn fabric with cross stitch. So pretty.

  15. I would love to make a Granny Square quilt to go along with the many granny square afghans I have crocheted.

  16. Love granny squares!! I am ready to quilt a sweet baby quilt (it is pieced and ready to machine quilt) for a little bun the the oven…a grand daughter due in May. I have already quilted a matching doll quilt for her as a surprise. DIL knows the baby quilt is being made, but the doll quilt for little Ava will be a surprise.

  17. Hi Clara & Jennie! I am (embarrassed to admit I am) making the label and adding the binding “Garden Steps” which should have been finished nearly a year ago. I love your block, it is fun and cheerful. XOXO

  18. I’m currently making a pleated bag (which I’m altering on the fly) with patchwork inserts and Hawaiian appliqué on the top panel. And my lovely daughter sent me a surprise gift of four fat quarters (she’s at uni, bless her) so I am looking for a worthy project to showcase them.
Always love a giveaway, but I’m in the UK so I don’t expect to win. Love to all, though xxx

  31. Right now, I’m quilting some quilts that have been waiting to be quilted. It’s more fun to make the quilt, but they aren’t very cute or useful folded up on the shelf. I would love to have my next project be catching up on this fun sewing bee with the granny squares. It would make the hard work of quilting even more worthwhile.
