Hello dear little sewing stars out there!!! This is Susi from Lilla Luise. I´m mommy to an almost 6-year-old girl called Jamie. Jamie happens to share my love of sewing so during the weekends you are very likely to find her at the sewing machine together with me. The two of us figured that you maybe love to create things together with your mommies as well so we came up with a fun superstar playmat that can easily be tied together into a bag to hold all your toys!
Here is a list of supplies we will need:
your favorite fabrics to sew one outside and one inside star
iron-on interfacing to make the outside star “superstar-strong”!
a sewing machine
6 eyelets and an eyelet setter
homemade bias tape or ribbon
First you need to print out the diamond template. There are two pages that you will have to tape together. The seam allowance is included!
As I already mentioned we will be creating one outside star and one inside star.
Each of these two stars is made of 6 diamonds, so we have to cut 12 diamonds in total – 6 for the outside and 6 for the inside star. You can use different fabric for each of the diamonds or go with 3 different fabrics like we did.
To create the outside star we need to cut 2 blue, 2 red and 2 gray diamonds. We also have to cut 6 diamonds of iron-on interfacing. Simply take the diamond shape, place it on the wrong side of the fabric, trace around it with a pen and cut it out. There is a seam allowance of a 1/4 inch included, so you don´t have to worry about that!
First we will create the outside star. We have to iron the interfacing onto the wrong side of the fabric diamonds. Once this is done you have to decide on a superstar layout!
What we will do is the following: we will divide our star into two halves and sew them together separately, because this way it will be much much easier. So we take two diamonds, layer them on top of each other with the right sides facing. Sew down the longer end of the diamond with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Take another diamond, layer it on top of one of the diamonds that you just sewed together and sew it on in the same way as you just did for the previous two diamonds. Then we have to take this half star to the ironing board and iron the seam allowances open. If you like you can do what we did and topstitch along the seams, very close to the seam to give it an even nicer look. But this is totally optional and something your mommy will most certainly happily do for you! Repeat those steps for the other 3 diamonds. Once you have done that you will have 2 star halves! We layer them on top of each other, right sides facing and sew them together. Once again press the seam allowance open and topstitch if you like. Now we got a full outside star!
To create the inside star you do the exact same things as for the outside star but you don´t need to iron any interfacing on. We just use the 6 fabric diamonds to sew the inside star.
Hooray, you should have one outside and one inside star now! To keep your superstar powers you should really take a break now and have some cookies and play time!
All refreshed and full of energy again? Yes? Great, let´s go on then! Now we need to layer the outside and inside star on top of each other with their right sides together. Take your time and make sure all the points of the stars match. Then take a lot of pins and pin the two stars together.
We will sew almost all the way around the complete star. I say almost because we need to leave a gap somewhere to be able to turn the star right out. The gap should be on one side of a diamond and about 5 inches in size. Don´t forget to back-stitch at the beginning and end of your seam! Turn the star right side out and iron it all nice and neat. Now topstitch all the way around the star – with mommy´s help! This way you will also close the turning gap. And now be insanely proud because you just created your very own superstar!
Now we need to attach the eyelets to the 6 points of the star. Please my lovelies, ask an adult to give you a hand there!!! If mommy or daddy don´t know how to attach the eyelets there are some instructions here:
Once this step is completed we are ready to make some bias tape for the string!
Take a strip of fabric that is 2.5 inches wide. The length depends on how long you want the string on your playmat bag to be. Keep in mind that it has to be long enough to go all the way around the star so it will be able to lay flat on a floor!
Fold your strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and press.
Open your strip again. The right side of the fabric is facing down, the wrong side of the fabric is facing up, facing you. Now fold both sides towards the crease in the middle that you have just created. Press again.
Fold it up on the middle crease (the crease you created in the first step), press.
We are almost done! Now we need to take that long strip to the sewing machine again and sew all the way along the open edge to close the strip so it forms a nice string for your superstar bag. Jamie always finds this part especially funny as it looks as if the sewing machine is growing a tail whilst you feed the bias tape strip through it! Once you have sewn from one end to the other take your newly created string and also do some stitching along the short sides just so it won´t fray! I´m sure mommy is going to help a lot if you decide to do your own bias tape! If you don´t want to do that simply take some ribbon instead of the bias tape, it will look just as lovely!
The only thing left to do now is pulling the string through all 6 holes and tadaaa – your magical superstar playmat bag is ready to be used for the most amazing games and adventures!!!
Grab your new superstar bag and go out there and be amazing!!!
Never ever forget to charge up those superstar powers every now and then!
We would be delighted if you want to visit us over at Lilla Luise! For now, have fun with the tutorial and we will see you back here next week!
