Mini Medallion Series : Center Block

This contributor post is written by Chrissy of Sew Lux Fabric

Hey there C&V Readers!

My name is Chrissy and I run Sew Lux Fabric with my mom.  We’ve been collaborating with Jennie & Clara over the past few years on a variety of projects so I was more than happy to become a contributor here!

I love a medallion project, but sometimes I shy away from them as they are usually big quilts.  I thought it would be fun to do a smaller (mini, if you will) medallion project here with you all.  This one will end up about 32 in x 32 in.  And I pulled a special bundle just for this project!

The Summer Breeze bundle is available while supplies last  (SOLD OUT!) and includes all the fabrics I will be using in this medallion project, including 10 fat quarters and two half yards of background fabrics.

A Little More About Our Quilt:

In the Summer Breeze Mini Medallion Series, we’ll be building our medallion over time.  The final design is a surprise – so we’ll reveal a new border each month.  You can catch sneak peeks on my Instagram (@sewlux) as I am working ahead.

Today’s post is the first post in the series.  The first week of each month, I will share a new border pattern here and will include a downloadable pattern for easy reference.  Here’s the rest of our schedule:

  • June 4 (that’s today!) – Center Block
  • July – Border 1
  • August – Border 2
  • September – Border 3
  • October – Border 4
  • November – Border 5 & Finishing

Materials Needed:

I am using a FQ bundle of 10 prints and two half yards (background).  This is plenty for this project and adds some variety to my blocks.  I will have some leftovers at the end of the QAL of some prints, which I will likely use to make a scrappy binding.  Alternatively, 1/3 yard for the binding would be needed.  And you’ll need 1 yard for the backing.  Of course, this would also be a great scrappy project as well if you are planning to sew from your stash.

Are you ready to stitch up your center?

Month 1 – Sew the Center Block:

Cut the following:

  • From Background:  Cut four 2.5″ squares; four 2.75 x 4.75 rectangles
  • From Yellow: Cut eight 2.75″ squares
  • From Solid Grey: Cut four 1.5″ squares
  • From Peach Tonal: Cut four 1.5 x 2.5″ rectangles
  • From Teal Print:  Cut one 2.5″ square for center

** Please excuse my blurry picture … I took these with my phone.  Bad idea.  :-/

Sew as follows:

First, piece the center unit.  This is essentially a 9 patch.  Sew together three rows and press toward the peach print.  Then sew the three rows together to complete the unit.  Press away from the center.

Then make the four geese units.  Note:  I like to make my geese big and then trim them down.  I have given measurements to allow for this.  I like to trim them down to size so that my piecing is more accurate.  Please see the downloadable file for this month’s pattern for more details.  (Pattern link at the end of this post.)

Then sew the units together – again, basically a 9-patch.  And then you’ll have this:

I really love it!  There is a small oops with one of the yellow prints going in the wrong direction, but I didn’t notice it until the block was together and it doesn’t bother me enough to pick it all out … at least for now!  🙂  But if that would bother you – pay more attention than I did as you make your geese!

Here’s a downloadable file for this month’s pattern (center block) with more detailed step-by-step instructions.

I hope you enjoyed making this block with me!  I can’t wait to sew with y’all again next month!

  1. Quick question: I just spotted this quilt along this morning, and I’m really behind on blog reading.
Is this the first post about it?
Is there more information somewhere else? I’ve paged through a couple months worth of blog posts and didn’t spot it, but I certainly could have missed it!
Is this a mystery quilt along, or is there a photo or drawing of the finished quilt? The materials listes above, 10 fq’s and 2 half yard cuts of background fabric all that is required for the quilt?
I love medallion quilts and love the idea of a small one!
Sorry to be a bother, and thank you!

    1. Hi Staci – This is the first post of the QAL and it will be a bit of a mystery – just to keep it a little more fun. Although, you’ll see sneak peeks on my instagram (@sewlux) as I work on future blocks and posts. 🙂 You can definitely make this scrappy as you’ll have some leftovers from some prints in the bundle. I plan to use a scrappy binding from the leftovers, and we’ll need 1 yard for the back once we’re done. Hope this helps!

  2. Just ordered my fabric and downloaded the pattern. I have just started following you and some other quilters on Instagram…………getting back into quilting and loving all the fun posts. Cant wait to start this! Thank you……..

  3. I just love the fabric and I’m always game for a mystery so I had to order your bundle! Thanks for the fun QAL!

  4. Thank you very much for this. I just joined in yesterday, but I’ve made my centre block already and put a photo on my blog. It’s going to be fun. Can’t wait for the next installment.

  5. I couldn’t resist, I started the center block yesterday evening, just after I stumbled upon this QAL. Thank you for hosting this! I am quite curious to next month, as I have not yet made a medallion before.
Do you intend to do a link- up or some sort of group? It would be fun to see everyones progress!

    Love,

    Ilse

  6. I couldn’t help myself. I had to quilt along with all you gals. I bought some Cotton and Steel fat eighths and I have some white linen I’m using for the background fabric. I made both the center block and the first border today to catch up with everyone.
I am posting about my block tomorrow at http://quilterinmotion.net

Thanks for the QAL. I don’t do Instagram (haven’t a clue how to).
