Blogger’s Quilt Festival – Spring 2011

Amy's Creative Side First, hello to everyone visiting from the Blogger’s Quilt Festival, welcome!  Amy has again put together a wonderful, virtual event, and I’m so happy to have something to share.  The lovely quilt I’m sharing in this post is not new if you’ve been around this blog for any length of time, but it is probably one of the favorite projects I’ve made so far, so I thought I’d share it again {sorry!}.  It isn’t a full-sized quilt {my little boy keeps me so busy, I don’t complete many of those}, but rather a quilt I made for the Doll Quilt Swap, which I participated in for the first time this spring.

I think one of the things I like most about this quilt is that it is so different from most of the quilts I make.  The fabrics are bright, and while they are all by the same designer {Sandi Henderson…she just might be my current fav…}, they’re not a line of fabrics {I’m really working on getting out of the box of using just one line of fabric for a project…bear with me, it’s a work in progress}.

The other is that it features the largest embroidery piece I’ve done so far, my embroidery version of Fig Tree & Co.’s Madeline pattern. I traced the outline and then filled it in with patterns from the fabrics I used for the half-square-triangles.  I really love the freedom of embroidery, it gives me the opportunity to add something completely unique to the quilt, and I also love the handwork.  While I’ve yet to try hand quilting, hand embroidery is a wonderful way to spend an evening {or several}.

And now, this little quilt is {still} making its way around the world to the lovely lady I made it for.  She seems like a sweetheart who loves beautiful, girly things.  So, while part of me wishes this quilt was hanging on my wall, I’m so excited for her to receive it.  Now, if only it would hurry up and make it there!

I hope you enjoyed my little quilt, how do you get inspired to try new things?

  2. Somehow I have missed this one! I just love it…the way you paired the triangles makes it look like those fabrics were made for eachother! I love the embroidery…is that hard to do?

  3. *Gasp!* Oh what a pleasant surprise this little gem was! I am not familiar with Sandi Henderson, but I am certainly going to investigate. I too am trying to break my habit of one quilt/one designer with mixed results. Your embroidery is such an inspiration! Both you and Aneela Hoey, compell me to dive right in to the embroidery pool! Thanks so much for sharing this!

  4. Even though I have seen it before, I really love it still. I like the colors you used in it. Bright colors are my favorites. And as for the embroidery…all I have to say is wow, because no way I’d have the patience for that!! It’s amazing.

  5. I absolutely love your little doll quilt, and was really hoping it was on it’s way to me! I do hope it gets to it’s (very lucky) recipient soon!

  6. What a beautiful centerpiece and you complemented it so well with the fabrics you used around it. I known that the use of the fabrics in the skirt was planned, the sophistication of the fabrics is so wonderful with the embroidery.
