Need a Kitchen Window?

I do!  Mine is just an ugly wall…if you want to make one of these, hop on over to Sew We Quilt Tuesday morning for my tutorial and free embroidery pattern!

The house I lived in a couple years ago in New York had a window over the kitchen sink {as is quite common in many homes}, and I find, as I’m washing the dishes that can’t go through the dish washer, I miss looking out the window.  So, I thought a cute little quilt would be the perfect thing to replace the window.

This cute little quilt actually doesn’t belong to me any more, but I think I’m going to stitch up another one.  You can download the free embroidery pattern here.

For this project you will need:
1 fat quarter solid fabric for embroidery & binding
10″ x 10″ fusible interfacing {like Pellon 808F Sof Shape}
56 – 2 1/2″ squares
2 – 1 1/4″ x WOF strips cream
1 fat quarter backing
Embroidery thread {my favorite is Finca Perle Cotton}
10″ embroidery hoop

FLQS: Making Progress

Cut a 10″ x 10″ square for embroidery.  Fuse the interfacing to the back.  Then, transfer the design to your fabric {new to Embroidery, here’s how I transfer my designs}.  I used a variety of stitches: back stitch, split stitch, french knots, stem stitch and running stitch {you can find tutorials for various stitches on my Embroidery 101 page}.

After finishing the embroidery, trim to 9″ x 9″ square, centering the embroidery design.  Use the 1 1/4″ cream or white fabric to create a border around the embroidered block.  Then, sew two sets of 2 squares x 9 squares of 2 1/2″ squares and two sets of 2 squares by 5 squares of 2 1/2″ squares.  Sew these on as borders.

Back, quilt, and bind as desired, and now your kitchen window is looking out to a little garden with a bird on a sunny day!And, if you’re visiting from Sew We Quilt, welcome!  I hope you find something you like and stick around, we have lots of great stuff in store for the future too!
