The Hexie Box & Rose Star Block (& Freebie)

Rose-Star-Box-1I participated in a Valentine’s Day swap with my friend Amber, and we swapped fabric boxes made from her pattern {she and I had swapped patterns a while back, so I’d been planning to make the Hexie Box for a while}. I wanted the box to be unique and to match her taste in fabric. I decided to put an English Paper Pieced {EPP} Rose Star on the top ob the box. I used the tutorial by Clare at Self Sewn to make my templates.

Rose-Star-Box-3I had only ever sewn basic hexagons for EPP, but as we’re getting ready to move cross-country this summer, I’ve been wanting to experiment more with hand sewing, since I will likely not be able to make much while we’re moving, but there will still be down time, and I love fabric, so I know I’ll want to make something! I was really pleased with the finished result and will definitely be making more of these.

Rose-Star-Box-2I also really enjoyed sewing Amber’s Hexie Box pattern, the entire box is hand sewn and turned out really cute. I wish I had thought to wear a thimble before I was 3/4 of the way finished with the box, because my fingers were a bit sore after all that hand sewing. My little ones have already requested fabric boxes for their trinkets, so I know I’ll be making more of these.

I have also created a template page for the Rose Star Block that fits on top of the large Hexie Box and am offering it as a free download for newsletter subscribers. If you’d like to subscribe, you’ll find a form in the sidebar and one at the bottom of the page. I don’t send out my newsletter often enough, but I’d like to increase the frequency. If you have any favorite features of other newsletters, I’d love to know what keeps you reading!
