Embroidery 101: Block Two

Well, since Just Wing It! is all about butterflies, I thought it would be fitting to have a butterfly block. The butterflies also incorporate the two new stitches from last week, running stitch and satin stitch. The running stitch is indicated by the dashed line; and the satin stitch is on the bodies of the butterflies and the spots on their wings. For the two small detailed butterflies use French knots for the dots and four or five stitches for the running stitch around their wings. {Please excuse the wrinkles in my photos, I haven’t decided whether I’m going to get a new iron before our things arrive.}

Download the PDF pattern here or the jpg image here. This pattern takes up the majority of the 5” square, so if your squares measure a bit smaller, you may want to adjust the size a little bit.

When designing this block I had originally imagined the detail on the two small butterflies would be another color, but since it required such a small amount of thread, I decided to use all one color and am happy with the result. However, using multiple colors is also an option.
