Flora Supply Case Sew Along :: Alternate Pocket Ideas #florasewalong

|

We’ve been sewing the Flora Supply Case (on sale for $6) for about a week now and I hope you’ve been having as much fun as I have! One of the things that makes the Flora Supply Case unique are the variety of pockets. Today I’m going to talk about the mesh pocket that’s finished with Fold Over Elastic.

The mesh pocket is one of the things people ask about. Mesh is available in the utility fabric section of a big fabric store, or from a variety of retailers online. However, my favorite source for mesh is the fine mesh of Lingerie Bags available at most stores for $2 or less!

If you’re still not sure about mesh, or aren’t planning a trip out, you can just substitute fabric. The pocket won’t be see through, but it will be fully functional. and also cute. This example was sewn by my Instagram friend Angelica, and you can find all her pretty makes at angelquilts.

Now, for the fold over elastic, one of the other unique supplies.  Another option is to use bias tape. Here I just made a little extra bias tape that used for my outside edge. Then I gathered the top and bottom edge of the mesh and finished the top edge with bias tape.

And finally, I made one pocket for this small size case with a casing and 1/4″ elastic threaded through it. This is actually the taller pocket in the photo (I’m making this for my  girls and they’re getting one fewer pocket!), but if you want to add a casing to a fabric pocket in place of the mesh, double the mesh pocket height, while keeping the width.  Then fold just like the larger pocket and sew a casing about 10mm from the edge and feed the elastic through the casing. Gather the bottom of the fabric as directed for the mesh. This actually removes the need for mesh or fold over elastic.
