Mini Dwell Mug Rug

I want to thank everyone who left kind comments on my Mini Merry Gift Boxes Mug Rug! I’m slowly working on replying to comments {something I am terrible about doing!}. But, know that I truly appreciate the time each of you took to leave a comment! There have been lots of complaints that comments are down in the blogging world, so all the love on the last post really encouraged me!

So, I wanted to share this little mug rug I made as part of an Instagram swap! I used the Mini Dwell pattern by Thimbleblossoms and just loved how it turned out. As I mentioned before, the theme of the swap was gingerbread, so Imade my houses brown, like gingerbread. Though I’ve kind of snubbed brown over the last couple of years, it is growing on me again {and I’m really glad I snagged a yard of that Katy Jump Rope print (brown and white flowers) while I had the chance!}.

I quilted it with different patterns and thread colors for different parts of the mug rug. This is hard to show with pictures, but you can kind of see the gray smoke coming out of the chimny!

I used bias tape and rounded the corners, but sadly, it caused the edges to curl! I wish I’d thought to use two layers of batting. I think this project was just too thin and the corners were too tight to get them flat {probably my inexperience with bias tape didn’t help either}. Even so, I was pleased to send the finished project to my partner and am planning another one {or maybe a whole mini} sometime in the near future {when all the dust clears from my current projects!}.

Are you working on Christmas projects? What are you making?

  1. this is such a cute project. I love the little houses. It may curl a little but once something is put on top, it will be fine. So cute.

  2. What a cute and special Mug Rug with those Mini Dwell Houses. Love the curved edges – really adds to it! Yes, the word bias sends me running – must be from my Home Ec Days in school yet 🙂 – you did a great job!

  3. I love the cute little houses! I remember seeing the original pattern and I thought it was charming, too. I want to make a big quilt of houses someday and just go crazy making each one individual and including plants and pets and people, haha! And please don’t feel obligated to write back at all. It would be nice if I had a question but, otherwise, I’d rather you didn’t really. I just comment to show the love and let the person know I appreciate their hard work. I wouldn’t want to do all that’s involved in writing a blog, frankly. And I sure don’t want to add to your to do list of obligations. That’s one of the things that burn out bloggers probably and I hate it when a good blogger just writes less and less, then disappears. Anyway! That’s not going to happen here! I’m going to see if I can find a tutorial I just saw about how to bind something small. It sounded like the person knew what they were talking about and I think even mentioned about how edges could curl up. If I find it, I’ll let you know. And you won’t need to write me back then either. Gosh, sorry this is so long, I’m so verbose! (wordy!)

  4. hi! Me again. The tutorial was by Crazy Old Ladies entitled “how to bind tiny things” and it was very recent. I hope you don’t mind me sharing this. I think your little Mug Rug is adorable. I am only trying to be helpful based on something you said, so I really hope you don’t see any negativity here. I only wish I had the talent to do a little mug rug. That’s why I’m reading everything! I have so much to learn! So I really appreciate your blog! Thanks!!

  5. Your mug rug is super duper cute! Aren’t mug rugs fun little projects? Fast and Fun! Next time consider using a piece of Insul-Brite batting. It will give the mug rug more heft and help protect the surface under it from the heat of a mug filled with a hot drink.

  6. It turned out so cute! I have no clue what I’m doing with bias tape, either, so I am not much help, but I saw in the comments that Beth found a link so I hope it will be helpful. I can’t even imagine how frustrating it must be to put so much time and effort into a project, and in the last little step something like the curling edges happens. I’m glad you still sent it because I think it is totally awesome and I’m sure the recipient will just love it!!

And as Beth said, too, you don’t have to reply to me all the time, either. You can if you want to, but please don’t feel guilty if you can’t. You have three children and lots going on. 🙂 Take care!!

  7. This is so sweet. It may be a while before I attempt something like this though! But I love mug rugs and I’m thinking of trying to make some in 2015 to give as presents to friends together with a mug and their favourite biscuits.
