Magnetic Hexie Needle Landing {Tutorial}

| |

hexie-needle-landing-2I’ve been incorporating more hand sewing back into my schedule, because of its portability and because I enjoy it. Then, the other night, when I was looking for a hand sewing needle for a different project, it occurred to me that this is a necessity for a sewing kit too. So, I used on of the precious Liberty Hello Kitty hexagons that my friend Susi of Lilla Louise sent me and added a magnetic needle landing to my hand sewing case since not every project has a hoop or somewhere to easily use a needle minder. If you want one too, here’s how to easily make one:

hexie-needle-landing-3I used a 3/4″ hexagon paper with a hole punched in it for easy removal {print your own templates here!}, a 18 mm sew in magnet {though, I’ve ordered some smaller ones, I just only had the larger size}, and a hexagon of fabric {I cut mine with 3/8″ of seam allowance, since it’s going to be holding down a magnet and hand stitched}.

hexie-needle-landing-4With the magnet behind the paper template,

hexie-needle-landing-7Use the hole to remove the hexagon paper {this is a little tricky because of the magnet!}.

hexie-needle-landing-8And now your needle landing is ready to sew!

hexie-needle-landing-9Hand stitch it to your base fabric {alternately, you could sew it down by machine too, my project was already finished, so I sewed mine by hand}.

a season by handI love the relaxation of hand sewing, it seems like the perfect way to spend summer outside, while still getting in some creative time. You can see my summer series from 2013 that’s full of hand sewn inspiration called A Season by Hand here. What is your favorite hand sewing project?

  1. What a wonderful idea. Told my quilting friends who are now keen to add a magnet to the new pin cushion we are making.
