Quilting on the Go…EPP :: Book Tour

| |

Welcome to my stop on the Quilting on the Go…English Paper Piecing Book Tour. Our latest family adventure is finding us homeschooling, and so I’m hoping to spend a lot more time hand stitching while the kids work. So, Sharon Burgess of Lilabelle Lane‘s new book is perfect!

I gathered my favorite supplies, the little star is thread wax, which I’d received in Quilter’s Candy Box but had never used. Let me tell you, it is amazing stuff! I had hardly any knots and no thread breakage! But, back to my project, I chose to use some hexagons I’d received in swaps for this first one. Since they’re cute and lots are of fabrics I don’t have, I thought this special project would be perfect.

I chose the placemat because I can use it on my table as a little runner as well. I sewed up the hexagon panels as instructed in the book. You can see my little basket with all my other swap hexies, I think I’ve got a few more placemats to add to my collection.

I trimmed my hexie to the proper sizes, and then I opened up the seam allowance on the long panel. I didn’t want to cut most of any of my precious hexies off, so I thought this would add to my width. I still cam out about 1/4″ short, so I trimmed the linen piece by that much.

Here you can see a bit of a closer look at the opened seams. I didn’t stitch them together, but they seemed to work just fine. I followed the rest of the directions without modification and my placemat came out so cute (if I do say so myself)!

How sweet is that?! I had the butterfly bias tape all made up, so I used it, as I was running short on time. You might also recognize the sweet Little Dolly print for the pocket, it was on my cutting table still and just called to me! I quilted the linen portion in my favorite wavy lines.

I couldn’t help but stage the photo with a mason jar, saucer (so it didn’t cover up the hexies) and some silverware. I actually didn’t realize the placemat had a pocket until I started cutting the rest of the fabric, what a pleasant surprise!

If you’re looking for the book and paper kits, also check out Paper Pieces, so then you don’t have to cut out those papers!

I hope you’ll take a peek at the other blogs in the blog tour, there is sure to be some amazing work.
