Aurifil 40wt Thread – My Favorite Thread Weight

| |

The April Aurifil Artisan Challenge is to share about our favorite thread weights (I’ll update this post when the Challenge Post is shared on the AuriBuzz blog so you can read about all the favorites!). I really debated long and hard about which thread weight to share. I’ve been using Aurifil 50wt for nearly all my projects for several years, I love how it disappears in my seams for piecing, is sturdy, doesn’t break often, and has less lint than the threads I used to use.

I’m choosing 40wt as my favorite thread because it’s what I choose for all my special projects, especially quilting! In fact, one of my first Aurifil thread purchases was a spool of variegated pink thread that I used to quilt my daughter’s Scrappy Trip Quilt Along quilt back in 2013. I loved how the quilting on that quilt stood out a little bit and looked special.

I finally finished this Love Script (pattern by Kristy at Quiet Play) pillow so that I could quilt it to show you the pretty 40wt thread in my favorite Blush 2415 (I sew and quilt everything in that color!). If you’re not familiar with different weight of thread, the lower the number, the thicker the thread. So, 40wt thread is thicker than 50wt thread.

I love sewing with 40wt when I want the stitching lines to show more than they would with 50wt. Especially when I’m quilting everything from quilts to pillows to Posey Supply Cases. I also love 40wt for sewing bags, especially cork bags, for its durability and appearance.

I just love how this pretty pillow turned out and am glad to have it in our home. I’m slowly building my collection of 40wt and always pick up a spool of 40wt when I quilt a quilt.

What is your favorite thread weight? Is this something you’re familiar with? Do you have any questions I could answer about thread weight? Happy sewing!
